Web Design: Stages of creating graphic design

When creating sites, one of the most important stages in the development of web design is important not only the content but also high-quality design, which will complement and emphasize the structure of the page. Neglecting the latter can negate all the rest of the work, because the visual effect of the site can be compared to a meeting on clothes, according to which most assess the level of the company, give out a credit of trust.

What should be the web design? – Unique and memorable, but not pretentious, the picture should not distract attention from the content, but, on the contrary, help to navigate the page and emphasize the most important.

Typically, the creation of a graphic design for a website consists of the following steps:

First step

Drawing up a technical task for a graphic designer, a creative specialist with logical thinking. It simultaneously combines several complex and important points: the created site must be bright, memorable, and unique, taking into account the specifics of the customer company, and at the same time be functional.

At this step, decisions must be made on many aspects:

1) choose a site structure: a one-page landing page or a multi-page multifunctional site,

2) designate the target audience,

3) study the existing sites of competitors, analyze the strengths and weaknesses,

4) the customer needs to maximize his ideas and ideas. To do this, you can create two lists of web pages that you like and absolutely do not fit,

5) designate the preferred color scheme and decide on the web design itself, taking into account the existing corporate identity of the customer company. 

Types of design:

a) flat design: practical, easy to adapt, easy to use, excludes volumetric objects, clear bright, often contrasting colors are used without smooth transitions,

b) promotional design is aimed at promoting goods, services, therefore it is distinguished by the presence of many marketing elements with a call to action, for example, pop-ups with “hot” promotions or pulsating elements to induce action;

c) minimalism is a whole strategy to simplify the interface, any element carries a semantic and functional load, due to which the pages of the site open faster and better compatibility for screens of different sizes is obtained,

e) illustrative design or Flat design: visual pictures and even individual elements can only be decorative for decoration and variety or convey some information in a convenient and easy-to-understand form. It is best if both functions are combined;

f) one of the most creative styles in web design, leaves wide boundaries for experiment, differs in textures and patterns, realistic details, muted matte shades of beige, brown, black and gray;

g) futuristic web design is characterized by a dynamic web design in cold colors with dominant shades of blue, silver, and light blue. Urban textures are inherent (metal, plastic, glass). Sharp corners, spiral and zigzag elements, dividing the whole into its component parts, voluminous, chopped, glossy fonts act as decor;

h) vintage style of web design is achieved through light, pastel colors. To attract attention, rectangles, circles, triangles, and other geometric shapes are used, which stand out in brighter colors in relation to the background. Retro textures are characteristic of this style: imitation of old paper, rough fabric, wood, and others. Symbols of the era are introduced to web design functional buttons (signs, icons, buttons on old equipment, etc.)

The second stage of website creation

Construction of a graphic layout of the future site with a pencil on paper or, in another way, paper prototyping. This is one of the most commonly used web design methods, despite all the new technologies. Because such a prototype allows you to demonstrate the structure of a web page and quickly get a response from the customer: drawing – discussion – drawing again.

With such a layout, the client understands what result to expect in the end, and the graphic designer is confident in the goals and requirements. The main task of this stage is to build the right interaction between the designer and the customer.

III. Creation or selection based on a ready-made layout of its template, which will show an example of how the site blocks work.

IV. Layout in a graphics editor, for example, Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop.

A competent and functional web design is one of the most important components of the success of the entire site. There are now many options for ready-made templates on the Internet that are not expensive or generally free. But with such a design, you should not count on exclusivity and recognition. You should not skimp on the services of an experienced specialist, all the funds invested in graphic design will pay off quickly and with interest.
